H is for Handheld MiniDV cam

I was under the impression that a MiniDV camera would provide a video feed to iChat AV when connected to a Mac via firewire. I couldn’t have been more wrong. It turns out that iChat AV (Public Beta): Does Not Recognize DV Camera on Computers With PowerPC G3. Hence my Canon ZR60 hooked up to the 900MHz iBook did not allow me to broadcast video. On the other hand, my G4/400 while being 200MHz shy of system recommendations allowed me to visually preview what I should be able to send out had I found another available iChat AV user at the time I had everything hooked up. I guess that just provides me with another reason to justify picking up an iSight.

G is for G5

The G5 is the new PowerPC chip from IBM as well as the name of a new line of amazingly amazing machines from Apple due for release in August. One often overlooked feature of these machines is the Optical Digital Audio I/O Apple has provided (perhaps in an effort to recognize the Pro Audio Market that may have begun to move away from Apple architecture). Despite that Apple arguably "Cooked the books" on the G5 speed tests, they did use an independent testing facilicy and provided all of the testing information to the public. Anyway you look at them, these machines are sure to please many power users who require speed.

Did I mention that I want one?

F is for features

Features is one thing that Panther (The forthcoming release of Apple’s OS X — due out by the end of the year) has copious amounts of. The new finder looks interesting, the jury however, is still out on this one. Exposé is my early favorite ‘cause I’m in that "which window" situation several times a day. iChat AV, while available now in beta is actually a Panther feature which if you’ve tested at all, probably has already blown you away.

E is for Echo

The Echo Project (a new weblog syndication format) is gaining strength among bloggers and weblog software developers. Once the the specs are sussed out and aggregator developers come on board, we’ll should have a vendor neutral format available to everyone.

Quark 6 is on Apple’s front page

Quark 6 on Apple's Front Page Screenshot

Apple is very serious about letting people know that the long awaited Page Layout Application/OS X hold out is almost avialble. According to Mac Central, QuarkXPress 6 for Mac OS X will ship next week!

Well if the Quark XPress 6 release is anything like version 4’s was in terms of stability, I’ll be waiting a year or so for the version 6.1 release before I can begin to incorporate it into my workflow. Expect my full report June 14th, 2004.
