There’s an interesting article on Steve Jobs’s choice of attire at statesman.com. I went though a big black mock/jeans phase myself many years back and can still be seen decked out in that combo from time to time, however I was never conscious of any sociological reason for making that choice (Jobs was in NeXT purgatory at the time, I was certainly not trying to emulate him).
