This is very much a work in progress. While I did live in Los Angeles in the late 80s, I live in NY now and I’m creating this tour from memory and a little help from MapQuest.

Ok, so you want to see some Frank Lloyd Wright homes while you’re staying in LA? Here’s my personal Quick and Dirty, Do-it-yourself tour. If you’re real lucky, I’m might throw in a Schindler, a Neutra and perhaps even a Lautner along the way.

We're going go start moving heading West on Hollywood Blvd., way East of what we know from the entertainment world as Hollywood Blvd (there are no stars on the street here). From Hollywood and make a right (North) on to N. Vermont and drive past Franklin as Los Feliz. This is the beginning drive up to the observatory, we're gonna avoid that crowd and make the left onto Cromwell followed by a quick right on to Gelndower. We'll continue making winding turns up the hills on Glen dower and shortly you will see the **Ennis-Brown House** (Frank Lloyd Wright, 1927). I visited the Ennis-Born House last in Jan., 2002 and I'm sad to say that the house is in bad shape due to the construction techniques, pollution, seismic activity and several other factors. Many of the textile blocks in the rear are falling apart. Hopefully it is getting the renovation it deserves. "Just showing up" like i've described gets you a look at the outside if you want a real tour, information is available at [http://www.ennisbrownhouse.org/][1] At this point it might be a good idea to point out that you're going to be visiting several different neighborhoods and you might want to be as polite an unobtrusive as possible. There isn't a lot of parking on the street and you might have to walk a little bit. Don't block someone's driveway then walk around and don't act like you own the place. The neighbors of these houses probably see people walking around all the time. Many of the houses we're visiting (and their neighbors) have private security. You really can't go wrong being as polite and courteous as possible. We'll head back to Hollywood Blvd. for our next stop (follow the above directions in reverse and make a right back on to Hollwood Blvd.) heading West, next stop -- Barnsdale Park. Look for the Barnsdale Park sign on the left just after you pass N. New Hampshire Ave on the left. Make a left into Barnsdale Park and swing up the hill (making a right at the fork). When you get to the top you'll see the **Hollyhock House** (Frank Lloyd Wright, 1917). If you packed a lunch, the park is a nice place to stop and have a bite on the lawn. The south side of the park offers a nice view of the city of Los Angeles (providing the smog has cleared). The house itself hasn't been open while I've visited, and is under renovation, but it's one of the few places on this tour that you can walk around a peek in though the windows without bothering anyone. All done at Barnsdale Park? Well then back to you guessed it - Hollywood Blvd. (just loop around the park) we'll make a left onto Hollywood and continue West. We'll go several miles and pass the 101 and through the heart of Hollywood (you might want to lock your doors). Make a right onto Highland and then a left on to Franklin a quick right onto Hillcrest Rd. and more quick right turn right on to Glencoe Way - right around the bend is the **Freeman House** (Frank Lloyd Wright, 1924). The USC Arctecture Department (the current owner) is currently renovating this textile block structure. Unfortunately most of what there is to see around this house isn't visible from the street. Making a U-turn on this street is difficult, you could accidently back off of the hill be careful. Reverse the directions because we're going to ... Continue West on Hollywood Blvd. until it "ends" and make a right onto Laurel Canyon. Now make the "legal" U-turn at the provided traffic construct. You should now be facing South and quickly coming up to the "ramp" of the often forgotten-about West side Hollywood Blvd, this is where we're going. About a block and a half later on your right you should see the **Storer House** (Frank Lloyd Wright, 1923). (I promise you won't miss it.) Ok, one more house for the day. Make the first left and take that street to Sunset Blvd, make a right (headding West). We're gonna travel on Sunset for a while. "How long?" you ask. Well, I'm sot sure, but we're gong to Brentwood if that helps. From Sunset Make a right on to N. Kenter Ave then anther right onto Skyeway Rd. halfway down the block on the left you will see a brick house cantilevered to the side of a hill this is the **George Sturges House (Frank Lloyd Wright, 1939)**. Because of the hill/cantilever design, you won't be able to see much unless someone comes out and invites you in (don't count on this), just take in the vibe and appreciate the structure. This is a cool house. Did you have fun? Good. We'll take Sunset Blvd west 'till it ends. We're going to Gladdstone's (4 Fish) to enjoy a nice seafood meal at sunset (the time of day, not the street silly) with the adult beverage of our choice, we've earned it.
